New ADB ALC4 Lights Up Jean Michel Jarre’s World Tour
EUROPE, SPRING 2010 – The new ALC4 LED cyclorama light from ADB Lighting is playing a key role in the lighting design of Jean Michel Jarre’s current world tour.
Created by lighting designer Ignace D’Haese, who worked in close collaboration with Jean Michel Jarre on the design, the show features 48 ALC4s, provided by tour lighting supplier EML Productions. The ALC 4s are used to great effect to light a giant 30 x 9 metre cyclorama that forms the stage backdrop, with 24 along the top and 24 along the bottom edge.
D’Haese explains that, in a minimalist design with no visible lighting movements but a lot of laser action and video back projection, “it’s great to have the contrast between the cyclo horizon and the few band members – a pure rectangle to silhouette the band – and I especially like the ADB ALC4; it was fabulous, there were things with it that we just couldn’t do before.”
He explains: “I was looking for a cyclo light for quite a while which was better than a normal cyclo light. I’d used ADB’s regular cycloramas before, which were really brilliant, good quality, a great reflector, one of the best. But on tour, especially when they have to form an important piece of the set, we needed a large quantity of cyclo lights and of course that means a lot of power and it’s tricky to choose the right filters to achieve the colours we wanted.
“With the ALC4s another advantage was that you can mix fluently between colours and you can do a big fade from top to bottom or the other way round without using different lenses. Like a video wall, all the lights are the same colour temperature, and there’s so many great colours such as purples and lavenders, and each light is exactly the same, which is essential on cyclos. It worked really, really well. ”
The ALC4, launched at IBC 2009 and the recent Pro Light+Sound show, is an energy-efficient dimmerless fixture that delivers the equivalent of 1250W of halogen power for 160W, featuring a 1 million-colour palette via DMX, including seven white presets. An internal colour-feedback system ensures precise and consistent colour output from the Lexel LED module, with colours combined in a mixing chamber to eliminate coloured shadows or separately visible colours.
